Race favourite Ostinato survived a first over trip over a sloppy surface to win the featured $5,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred 3 Pace on Wednesday night at Flamboro Downs.
Parked through a :29.3 opening quarter from post five, Ostinato and driver Scott Coulter moved up to apply first over pressure to leader Rachel Welch (Billy Davis Jr.) during middle splits of :59.1 and 1:28.2. Ostinato inherited the lead when Rachel Welch jumped it off at the top of the stretch and took the pocket-sitting No Teasing Me (Jody Jamieson) out of contention. Ostinato then held off a bothered Cards That Count (Anthony MacDonald) in the stretch for the one and a quarter length victory in 2:00 flat. Artomatic Love (Robert Shepherd) rounded out the top three finishers five and a half lengths behind.
The popular daughter of Western Terror paid $5.60 to win.
Owned by trainer Jim Wellwood of Ancaster, Ont. and Toronto's Jeffrey Wellwood, Ostinato earned her 25th career win (fourth this year) while pushing her bankroll over the $250,000 mark.
