Nebraska Gaming Expansion Approved

On Tuesday, November 3, voters in Nebraska approved three ballot initiatives that allow six licensed horse racetracks in the state to introduce casino gaming to their operations.

As a report by the Omaha World-Herald explains, some of the proceeds that the state will receive from the gaming expansion will be directed towards property tax relief.

Advocates of the gaming expansion have said that Nebraskans have annually been wagering an estimated half-billion dollars at casinos in neighbouring states, and have taken the position that it is time to keep the money in Nebraska.

Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association Executive Vice President Lynne McNally expects that the state's Thoroughbred race dates -- which currently ring in at 53 -- should be able to be doubled, going forward.
