Groovy Joe ($3.50) continued his reign over the top pacers at Flamboro Downs by way of a 1:54 win in Wednesday's (Nov. 3) $13,000 Preferred 2 Pace — his third consecutive score at the course and class.
After taking the direct route to victory in his two previous tries, the four-year-old son of Roll With Joe changed tactics — but the result remained the same. Paul MacKenzie floated Groovy Joe into fifth behind pacesetter Prestige Seelster's :27.2 first quarter before commencing a sustained first-over attack with five-eighths to go in the one-mile race. At the :57.1 half, Groovy Joe worked into second alongside pocket foe Ideal Perception before continuing on to throw down with Prestige Seelster up the backstretch.
Groovy Joe wrested control from the pacesetter through a :27.4 third split, and then edged away to a 1-1/4-length victory while driven out. Ideal Perception and Anthony Haughan saved second up the open stretch; Captainofrocknroll and Austin Sorrie rallied down the grandstand side for third.
