Last-to-firsts sweeps aren’t something you see very often when it comes to half-mile track racing, but Tuesday’s $15,000 Preferred Trot produced one thanks to an impressive score by Chewey
.
The five-year-old son of Trainforthefuture-Marie Adonno was in no hurry getting away from the starting gate for driver Robert Shepherd, who tucked into the six-hole while Winzel rolled the trotters to the quarter pole in :28.3. Winzel was still in command at the half in a :59-second, but Chewey lost two positions and found himself sitting last in the eight-horse affair.
Winzel was still the boss at the three-quarter pole in 1:29, but he was under heavy first-over pressure from Dashing Earl. Chewey, in the meantime, was still at the back of the bus. Dashing Earl took over command at the top of the stretch, and Chewey was still charted eighth while commencing a five-wide charge. Chewey’s :30.3 closing panel was enough to reel in Dashing Earl, who came up a half-length short. Zorgwijk Jock was third in the contest, which was clocked in 2:00.4.
Sent off at odds of 7-1, Chewey picked up his seventh win of the season for trainer Ed Galinski. The 10-time winner, who is racing under lease to the Kingfisher Farm of Seneca, ON, has banked $94,282 to date.
