Veteran campaigner Secret Weapon used his patented closing kick to perfection on Monday en route to winning Western Fair Raceway’s $15,000 Preferred
Handicap.
The nine-year-old son of Western Hanover-Falcons Secret had just one rival behind him at the quarter pole, but managed to pass six foes in the final three-quarters of the featured affair.
Scott Young angled Secret Weapon into the seven-hole while Acceptable Risk rolled the group past the quarter pole in a :28-second clip. Allamerican Motive was on the move on the way to the half, and he poked a head in front of Acceptable Risk at the mid-way point in :57.3.
Acceptable Risk regained the lead in the backstretch, but Allamerican Motive was hounding him to the three-quarter pole in 1:25.1. Secret Weapon, in the meantime, made a three-wide move and started to pick off rivals one by one. His :29-second closing speed earned him the head decision over Justalittleluck in 1:55.1. It was just a half-length back to third-place finisher Acceptable Risk.
Wayne Preszcator trains the winning gelding for the Secret Weapon Stables of Waterloo, ON. The victory was the 11th of the season for the 47-time winner who now boasts earnings in excess of $546,000.
