A patient steer from driver Scott Knight allowed Jans Rich Girl to convert a pocket trip into a winner's circle photo in the $10,000 Fillies & Mares Open on Sunday afternoon
at Fraser Downs.
Knight and Jans Rich Girl, the second choice in the field of five, stalked favoured Lickcreek Jazzy (Ed Hensley) in the garden spot through fractions of :27.2, :56.2 and 1:25.3. As Hensley asked his mare for more step, Knight sensed the leader was vulnerable and right-lined his mare around the final turn. In the stretch, Jans Rich Girl powered past the pacesetter en route to the 1:55.3 score. Judges Acenthehole (Jim Marino) finished third.
A five-year-old homebred daughter of Camluck from Rich Jan, Jans Rich Girl has clearly found her best stride at five with eight wins from 27 starts and more than half of her $129,988 lifetime bankroll coming this season. Scott Knight trains for Sunbury Stables of Aldergrove, B.C.
