The Canam Banker asserted himself on the front end and upset as the longest shot on the board, defeating five rivals over a surface labelled good in the $11,500 Preferred Handicap Trot at Rideau Carleton Raceway on Thursday, Nov. 27
Starting from the inside, The Canam Banker clashed with Raising Rusty (Melanie Plourde) and Tyrone Bow Tie (Pascal Berube) early and forced both of them take back as he secured the lead in a :28.4 quarter. He headed the single-file group to the half in 1:00 for Guy Gagnon but was prompted to up the tempo to three-quarters in 1:28.2 as Tyrone Bow Tie, a 12-time Rideau Preferred winner this year, came calling out of the three-hole. But The Canam Banker repelled him at the top of the lane and strode to his first career Preferred win by 2-1/4 lengths in 1:58.3. Tyrone Bow Tie held off Raising Rusty for second.
The Canam Banker, trained by Carl Duguay, is now five-for-34 this season. The four-year-old son of The Bank-Fiery Ash took his ninth win in 67 career starts, raising his earnings to $134,903. Duguay, of Trois-Rivieres, Que., co-owns the gelding with Investissement KFB of Sorel-Tracy, Que. The winner returned $23.40.
Exotic Sand remained perfect in the Rideau ranks as he stretched his win streak to six in the $8,000 conditioned pace later on the card. Marie-Claude Auger drove the seven-year-old grey gelding to a gate-to-wire 1:56.2 score, keeping him undefeated since moving to Rideau and the John MacMillan barn in October. The son of American Ideal-Jus Chilln Out, owned by MacMillan of Odessa, Ont. and 2099551 Ontario Inc. of Greely, Ont. was a half-length clear of Lovemyrockinbird (Sylvain Lacaille), who closed for second over Stonebridge Hermes (Plourde).
