Modern Cinderella was regarded as the one to beat by a great deal of the betting public in Tuesday’s $12,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred at The Raceway at the Western Fair District, and the distaffer didn’t disappoint her legion of supporters.
Sent off as the 9-5 favourite in the eight-horse affair, Modern Cinderella was a front-stepping winner for driver Bruce Richardson in 1:56.3.
Richardson turned down what could have been a two-hole trip with the four-year-old daughter of Modern Art-Southwind Stellar, instead opting to slice out the speed. Putnam Mackenzie darted to the early lead from Post 6 with Modern Cinderella riding along in the deuce until Richardson right-lined his charge at the mid-way point of the backstretch. Modern Cinderella sprinted to the lead and crossed over in front of the field shortly after the opening quarter flashed up in :27.2.
From there, Modern Cinderella carved out fractions of :57.3 and 1:26.2 before using a :30.1 closing panel to win by a half-length margin over the hard-closing Misty Moonstone. Classy Lane Rose, who applied first-over pressure to Modern Cinderella in the final half of the contest, was only three-quarters of a length back in third.
Erv Abdulov of London, ON owns and trains the nine-time winner who has manufactured a 4-6-4 record from 26 trips to the track this season. The $6,000 payday bumped her lifetime earnings to $176,215.
