Dragons Lucky Lady prevailed in her second try in Saratoga Casino Hotel's $20,833 Fillies and Mares Open Pace on Monday afternoon, Nov. 25.
The Per Engblom trainee, who finished fourth in her local debut last week on Nov. 18, went off at odds of 5-1 on Monday in what wound up being a five-horse Open after a host of scratches.
Dragons Lucky Lady made her move from fourth approaching the half-mile pole and overpowered the leader in a third quarter that she paced in 27 seconds for driver Chris Long. Opening up a big lead past three-quarters in 1:24.2, Dragons Lucky Lady held off a late bid from rival Alittlesidehustl N (Billy Dobson) to score by a neck in 1:53.1 and record her fifth win of the season in what has been another six-figure campaign for the six-year-old Dragon Again mare. The favoured Remy Brown N (Mark Beckwith) got shuffled a bit before shaking loose late to finish third.
Dragons Lucky Lady paid $12 to win in the mild upset.
The talented invader is owned in partnership by Morrison Racing Stables and Brian Gordon.
Dragons Lucky Lady was the second consecutive winner on the card for Engblom and Morrison Racing Stables, whose Flower Shops prevailed in a $13,889 fillies and mares conditioned pace as the favourite. That three-year-old filly was piloted to her Monday victory by Leon Bailey.
Live harness racing continues on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at Saratoga with a matinee that begins at 12 p.m.
