Last to the quarter pole and first to the finish line was the way things worked out for Muscle Matters in Saturday’s $11,500 Preferred 2 Handicap Trot at Flamboro Downs.
Scott Coulter was in no hurry with the heavily favoured Muscle Matters, who watched Happy Holidays roll through fractions of :28.2, :59 and 1:28.4. Coulter made a big move in the third quarter with Muscle Matters was second and pressing the leader heading into the final frame. Muscle Matters then used a :30.1 closing panel to win by a neck over Seeyou Men in 1:59.1. Happy Holidays weakened late and settled for third.
Trainer Ben Baillargeon co-owns the six-year-old son of Muscle Mass-Sister Mary Lindy with Nunzio Vena, Santo Vena and Richard Thompson. The gelding improved his 2017 record to 6-4-4 from 26 starts with the win. He’s a 17-time winner closing in on $550,000 in lifetime earnings.
