Grey Sea stood out among her field of Distaff Preferred pacers in more ways than just her grey coat as the Gord Abbott student went gate-to-wire to post a 5-1 upset over the favourite and take home the winner's share of the $10,000 purse on Thursday, Nov. 23.
John Abbott and Grey Sea posted panels in :27.3, :57.4, and 1:25.4 before continuing home to win by one length in 1:54.4, fending off the even odds favoured Miss Itunes (Phil Giesbrecht) in the stretch. Danzig To Dharma (Rod Therres) rounded out the triactor.
The four-year-old Custard The Dragon mare is owned by breeder Seaspray Stables. She moved her seasonal record to 9-4-3 in 20 starts and career tally to 13-4-3 in 24 starts. Grey Sea boosted her lifetime bankroll to $87,250. She paid $13.20 from 5-1 odds.
Kootenay Cocoa went five-for-five in her young career after winning the card finale with Giesbrecht in the bike for trainer Kyle Chadwick and owners Robert & Barbara Chadwick. The freshman filly won in a career best 1:54.4. She returned $2.30 to win.
