Brothers Tussle In Two-Horse Race

Freehold Raceway hosted the $10,000 New Jersey Futurity for two-year-old open pacers this past Saturday (Oct. 28). For the first time in history this particular New Jersey Futurity was referred to as the ‘Battle of the Brothers.’

Hurrikane Empress – who is trained by and was driven by John McDermott, faced off against Melanies Fran, who is trained by and was driven by Kevin McDermott.

Melanies Fran left as the gate folded, grabbed the lead and cut the fractions (:28.4, :58.3, 1:28.4). Hurrikane Empress got up in the homestretch and eventually posted a neck victory in 1:58.2.

The Hurrikane Kingcole filly has now won six of her 13 starts and has banked $140,815 in purses.

Hurrikane Empress is owned by the partnership of Jonathan Klee Racing, Kuhn Racing LLC and Pegasus Investment Group.
