Following the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority’s monthly board meeting on Friday, chairman Carl Goldberg indicated that the 2011 racing schedule for New Jersey is expected to be revealed within the next 30 days
.
Last week, the New Jersey Racing Commission approved a 141-day meet at Meadowlands but on Monday a second report from Jon F. Hanson was received by the Administration for New Jersey Governor Chris Christie recommending a reduced six-day "super standardbred meet" in August to maintain the heritage of the Hambletonian followed by a 30-day meet at Monmouth Park in the fall of 2011 and a 70-day meet in subsequent years.
“We would have an obligation to notify the standardbred owners by the middle of December as to what available races and what purse structure will be in place for the meet that begins shortly after the new year,” Goldberg was quoted as saying in a NorthJersey.com article.
According to the article, Goldberg noted that Gov. Christie has not yet weighed in on the suggestions from the second Hanson report.
“We all recognize that it is everybody’s goal here to maintain the viability of horse racing in New Jersey,” said Goldberg. “Clearly, it is a complex set of issues, and there is a cause and effect to everything.”
