A career winner of more than 100 races as a trainer, B.C. horseman Ty O'Neill had a different winning experience on Friday night (Nov. 15) at Fraser Downs.
O'Neill, who began training horses in 2004, celebrated his first driving win (and earned his 129th training win) in rein to Deadwood Hanover in the evening's ninth race for $6,000 claimers.
Making his 16th start in the sulky, O'Neill engineered a 35-1 upset as the six-year-old Western Ideal gelding emerged between rivals in the stretch off a ground-saving trip and nosed out Dont Wannabe Late and Fuzzywuzzywasabear in a photo finish. Deadwood Hanover won for the seventh time in his career, coming within two-fifths of a second of a his 1:55.2 career mark.
Alexis O'Neill owns Deadwood Hanover, who returned $71.10 to win.
