West Coast Kid rewarded his many backers in the $4,500 Joe MacRae Memorial Fall Series final, presented by MacRae Backhoe & Trucking, on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 12 at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
David Dowling supplied the winning steer for trainer Philip Kelly, who co-owns the five-year-old son of Betterthancheddar with Lynn MacLaren, John MacKenzie and Colton Profitt. Painted Pony (Marc Campbell) cut out the fractions of :29, :59 and 1:29.1 with the heavily favoured West Coast Kid on the first-over attack to get up for a 1:59.4 win over a track rated one second off. Painted Pony held on for second over Egamer (Adam Merner).
Dowling also steered his trainee Middleton Terror to a win in the $3,450 Preferred 2 Pace in a 1:56.2 mile time for owners Kingsley Walsh and Frank Balcom.
Youremyhearthrob was another Dowling trained and driven winner in race seven in 2:00 flat for the driving triple.
Tell Me Why and Ken Murphy scored a 12-1 upset in the $3,200 MacRae Series consolation in 2:02.2 for trainer Joe MacDonald, who co-owns with Alexis Gass.
The Jeff Holmes stable was clicking on all cylinders with the Orwell, P.E.I. trainer winning four dashes on the afternoon, including Elroy Shiner (Brady Sweet) in 1:59.2, Vino Louie (Gilles Barrieau) in 1:57.2, Outrageous Show (Corey MacPherson) in 2:01.2 and Imalookertoo (Barrieau) in 1:58.1.
Barrieau had a trio of winners as he also drove Silver Spirit to victory in race 16 in 1:58.2 for trainer Devon Wallace.
Island Beach Boy won the $3,800 Preferred Pace in 1:55.4 for driver Brodie MacPhee, trainer Tom Weatherbie and owners Arnold Hagen and Ian Smith. Stash It Away (Murphy) was second with Mantario (Dowling) third.
The ageless Rose Run Quest scored win number 70 of his career in race 13 as Merner steered the Melissa Rennie trainee to a 1:58.1 win for owners Blair and Carl Hansen and Isaac Schurman.
Drivers Jason Hughes and Campbell each won one race to remain tied for top driving honours on the season at Charlottetown Driving Park.
Live harness racing continues on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 12:30 p.m., at Red Shores Charlottetown with Horseperson’s Day, presented by the P.E.I. Standardbred Horse Owners Association. The afternoon also features the annual driver’s championship with the top driver being presented with the Paul MacDonald Memorial Trophy.
