Sitting off a contested pace, trainer-driver Kelly Hoerdt hustled race-favourite Cusdmagicdragon towards the top into the final turn and cruised to a 1:53.3 victory in the $8,100 Fillies and Mares Open Pace on Wednesday (Nov. 11) at Fraser Downs.
Paperback Thriller pushed for the lead from post 7 heading to a :27.4 opening quarter, but yielded command passing the stands as Tahiti Seelster brushed from third to the front before a :56.2 half. But Paperback Thriller popped out for more up the backside, clearing command past three-quarters in 1:24.4 as Sell A Bit N ranged into contention on the rim tracked by Cusdmagicdragon. Off the turn Sell A Bit N took a narrow lead until Cusdmagicdragon gathered her momentum and slid by in the final eighth to win by two lengths. Sell A Bit N held second with Hanks Mystress closing for third and Paperback Thriller fading to fourth.
A five-year-old mare by Custard The Dragon, Cusdamagicdragon won her third race from eight starts this season and her 26th from 67 overall, earning $318,791. Hoerdt co-owns the homebred for Blair Corbeil and Erna Corbeil who paid $4.60 to win. The victory was also the fourth on the training side for Hoerdt, having also steered his pupils Thinkingofyoubabe ($3.40), Lisas Carolina Lou ($3.60) and Watch Me Boogie ($2.30) to victory on the 10-race card.
