"Just Happy To Be A Part Of Their Day"

In a season of goodwill, Scott Zeron decided to get into the spirit a little early

At the age of 22, Zeron has quickly established himself as one of the leading drivers in North America. The resident of Oakville, Ont. currently leads all Canadian reinsmen with 485 wins.

But it’s not only on the track where Zeron has stamped himself as a true professional.

On Thursday, November 10, Zeron was on-hand with Woodbine Entertainment Group and Halton Police to help kick off the annual Toys for Tots charity campaign, which benefits the Salvation Army in Milton. He’s just one of many WEG drivers who have confirmed their participation in assisting the charity and will donate a portion of their winnings.

Zeron, who has amassed over $14.8 million in career purses with over 1,500 trips to the winner’s circle, didn’t stop there.

This morning, Zeron journeyed to British Columbia to participate in the province’s Breeders’ Classic Day, which features a pair of $75,000 stakes events, the Robert Murphy Stakes for three-year-old colts and geldings and the Mary Murphy Stakes for three-year-old fillies.

Most notably, though, Zeron will donate his earnings from the entire racing card to support the Royal Canadian Legion in honour of Remembrance Day.

“In the past, my dad (Rick Zeron) and Mark MacDonald have gone there, and this year they asked me,” said Zeron, who has live drives in both events, piloting the Rick Lancaster-trained Stepuptotheplate and Gramrun Jake. “It’s a special night for them with their big stakes races on one card and when they asked me to be a part of it, I jumped at the opportunity.”

Zeron is honoured to be associated with their Remembrance Day celebration.

“I’m just happy to be a part of their day,” he said. “It’s like their Breeders Crown day of races and, of course, I want to win every race, especially for a good cause.”

Zeron will be well-prepared for his inaugural visit.

“I’ve never been to BC before, but I’ve watched a bunch of races and have a good idea of what to expect. It looks like a serious speed track so it’s going to be exciting,” he said. “I talked with Billy Davis, Jr., who is originally from there, and he gave me the ins and outs of the track surface and a few pointers. My dad has also told me about what to expect, so I’m prepared.”

With the Christmas season approaching, Zeron didn’t mind taking time out from his busy schedule to accommodate the less fortunate in the Milton region.

“I was really happy to help the Toys for Tots charity,” Zeron said. “They had a great crowd there with a lot of people showing their support for the kids. The atmosphere was really special with all the kids smiling and screaming.”
