Bettor On Than Off made up an early 10-length deficit as he circled a field of Truro Raceway's top pacers to earn his third straight victory in the Winners Over Handicap and complete a training triple for Danny Romo on the Sunday, Nov. 1 card.
Driven by Robert Laffin, outside assignee Bettor On Than Off trailed the field of five in the afternoon's $2,500 feature as Bronx Drifter (Keith Legge) tried to get the jump on his rivals and sprinted away through a :26.4 opening panel, but the runaway leader's advantage started to shrink through subsequent splits of :55.2 and 1:24.4. Bettor On Than Off had advanced within two lengths by the final turn and powered past in the stretch to prevail by three-quarters of length in 1:55 flat. Freaky Fanny (Darren Crowe) followed from the pocket back in third.
Bettor On Than Off paid $3.80 to win as the 3-5 bettors' choice. Trained and owned by Romo, the seven-year-old Bettors Delight-Lights Go Out gelding is now 11-for-18 this year. The career winner of 27 races sits just shy of $50,000 in earnings.
Romo also had earlier victories with the maiden-breaking three-year-old filly Port Hill Polly ($5.70) in 2:01.1 with Darren Crowe in the bike and sophomore miss Saulsbrook Desi ($5.70), who romped by eight lengths in a career-best 1:56.2 mile with Keith Legge in tow. Both fillies are owned by Grayland Farm of Hubbards, N.S., and Joseph Gamba of Gulf Shore, N.S.
Romo's three wins on the seven-race card pushed his Truro total to 16 this year, which ranks third best in the trainer standings behind Crowe (18) and perennial leader George Rennison (22). The Shubenacadie, N.S. horseman has won 1,088 races lifetime.
The 2026 meet at Truro Raceway will conclude next Sunday, Nov. 8.
