The conditions were downright dreary this morning for the qualifying session at Mohawk Racetrack, but that didn't stop Metro Pace winner Sportswriter from putting in his first charted mile in almost a month

.

The session kicked off over a 'sloppy' track rated three seconds slow by the presiding Ontario Racing Commission judges.

During what was the second race on the seven-dash docket, driver Mark MacDonald fired the Artsplace colt out from Post 3 and settled him third as Whackamole Hanover (driven by Sylvain Filion) cut the opening quarter in :29.2.

MacDonald and Sportswriter were on the move first-up along the backstretch. The duo were overland in first as they clicked off the opening half-mile in 59 seconds.

Easing onto the cones in the third panel, Sportswriter, unbeaten in all six of his career starts, went on to trip the three quarters in 1:27.1. Whackamole Hanover tracked Sportswriter in the final quarter, which the Casie Coleman trainee paced in :28.1 for a 1:55.2 victory.

This past weekend, Coleman took some time to discuss Sportswriter's dance card for the next couple of weeks.
