Guy Gagnon and his filly Tuggingoncredit invaded Hippodrome 3R for the first time on Sunday (Oct. 6) and the two-year-old pacer came away with the Lucien Bombardier Trophy.

The program’s $29,400 feature saw Gagnon leave with Tuggingoncredit to take the early lead after a quick battle with Hit By A Bus (driven by Yves Filion) by the quarter pole in :27.4.

Tuggingoncredit then breezed on the lead the rest of the one-mile race. She pulled away more and more past the half mile in :57, then the three-quarters in 1:26.1. By the top of the stretch, Tuggingoncredit and Gagnon blew the field away. They won by six open lengths in 1:56.3. Mia Culpa (Jocelyn Gendron) finished second and Sophies Destiny (Stephane Brosseau) finished third.

The win produced a new lifetime mark for Tuggingoncredit, who is by Up The Credit. The victory was the fourth of her eight-race career. Tuggingoncredit is trained by Gagnon and co-owned by Guy Gagnon, Inc., Louis Latulippe, Inc. and Bruno Blouin, Inc., all of Quebec. She paid $3.10 to win as the betting favourite.

One of the ‘pioneers’ of horse racing in Canada, but especially Quebec, Lucien Bombardier devoted his entire life to the industry. Born and raised near Bedford, Que., Bombardier retired in 1992 after 16 years on the board of directors of the Canadian Standardbred Horse Society.

With sponsorship from Standardbred Canada and the Quebec Jockey Club, the Hippodrome 3R revived the stakes race in 2011.

Trainer/driver Carol Voyer rated a perfect Maracasso ($3.90) on the front end to capture the sixth race Preferred-Handicap Pace in a speedy 1:54.4, which was the fastest mile on the card Sunday. The triumph was Maracasso’s ninth win of the season and his third consecutive victory.

The Preferred-Handicap Trot saw Volare ($3.90) and driver Tyler Jones take command by the opening quarter mile and then led the rest of the race. Volare went on to win with ease in 2:00.2.

Track Notes: Trainer/driver Carol Voyer led all drivers and trainers on Sunday with two wins. Live racing will resume at the Hippodrome 3R next Sunday with first-race post time at 1:00 p.m. For more information and full race results, visit quebecjockeyclub.com.
