Stevenson Pursues Summerside Title

Shadowcross Benita captured the first of two $3,417 divisions of the Red Shores Fall Classic Series for three-year-old P.E.I. foaled pacing fillies on Wednesday night at Summerside Raceway, providing driver Mike Stevenson with one of his five wins on the program

. Driver Gary Chappell notched his fourth win on the 14-race card in the second division with A Teddy A Shine.

In the opening division of the series for non-winners of $10,000 lifetime, Shadowcross Benita and Stevenson converted from the pocket to win in 2:06.2 by a half-length over a quick-closing Dustylane Koko (Corey MacPherson), the 44-1 longshot, and 3-2 favourite Ultimate Faith (Kenny Arsenault), who set all the pace.

Shadowcross Benita paid $8.60 to win as the 3-1 third choice. J. Charles O’Brien owns and trains the homebred Benvolio Hanover-Rose Totheoccasion filly, who sports a record of 2-3-3 in 16 outings this year.

In the second division, A Teddy A Shine and Chappell, the 5-2 second choice, beat out the favoured Emyvale (Vince Poulton) by a neck in 2:01.1. Askbeforeyousign (Andrew Moore) was third.

A Teddy A Shine paid $7.70 for her third win in 12 starts this year. The homebred daughter of The Black Trooper-White White Wine is owned and trained by Chris MacKay.

Stevenson also won with Paid In Silver (1:59) for trainer Glenn MacKay, Woodmere Rockette (2:02.1) and Pan Cushion (1:58.4) for Trevor Hicken, and Hueys Boy (2:01) for Sean MacSwain pushing his win totals to 111 for the year and 1,239 lifetime. Having recorded 36 of his 2010 wins at Summerside, he trails leading driver Chappell by just four wins.
