Grinding to the lead through the first half of the race, Icy Blue Scooter showed little fatigue from the wide trip as he cruised away to an open-length victory in the $8,100 Open Pace at Century Downs on Tuesday (Oct. 5).
The eight-year-old Blue Burner gelding raced parked from fourth through a :28 first quarter set by Retros Mystery and marched forward for the front passing the stands first time. Icy Blue Scooter cleared command past a :57.1 half and maintained control while pressed by Sometime Somewhere up the backside, clicking by three-quarters in 1:25. Around the final turn, Icy Blue Scooter gained separation and strolled to the finish 4-1/4 lengths better than Crackle N Burn taking second. Sometime Somewhere settled for third.
Co-owned by trainer-driver Nate Sobey with Diane Bertrand and Robert Gilhespy, Icy Blue Scooter won his fifth race from 13 starts this season and his 34th from 158 overall, pushing his earnings to $263,543. He paid $3.90 to win.
