Streaks Continue In Island Breeders

The streak was expanded to seven straight for Red Dirt Boomer in the ‘glamour boys’ division of the Island Breeders finals Saturday afternoon on the championship card at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

The Gilles Barrieau-trained and driven colt guarded the rail from the start and cruised to a 1:56.1 victory in the $12,000 three-year-old pacing colt Island Breeders Final Harry O’Brien Memorial over Q Ts Charlie (Ken Murphy) and Notorious (Marc Campbell). A product of breeder Lowell Balderston of North Wiltshire, Red Dirt Boomer is owned by Daniel Ross of Belfast.

The Island Breeders final for three-year-old pacing fillies, named the Ron McInnis Memorial saw a major upset as Woodmere Oleksiak (David Dowling) had her win streak cut at eight races as fellow Earl Watts stablemate After The Lovin captured the $12,000 purse in 1:58. A daughter of Carnivore, After The Lovin is owned and bred by Windemere Farms of Hampshire and River Valley Management of New Brunswick. Elm Grove Nellie (Dale Spence) completed the triactor.

Keeping his win streak still intact, Gettin Messi won his sixth straight in the $8,500 Island Breeders three-year-old trot final Albert Bernard Memorial as Mike McGuigan guided the son of Armbro Barrister to a 2:00 victory over Thelastonestanding (Brian MacPhee) and Dusty Lane Titan (Campbell). Len McGuigan trains Gettin Messi for owner Jamie Whalen of Avondale.

Tequila Tuesday (Myles Heffernan Sr.) erased the three-race win streak of Mabou Ridge (Clare MacDonald) as the former controlled the front end in the $8,500 Island Breeders two-year-old trot final named in Memory of Mrs. James ‘Ma’ Poulton. Time of the mile was 2:03.3 with Mabou Ridge second and Incredible Hally (Campbell) finishing third. Bred by William Andrew of Calgary, Alta., Tequila Tuesday is trained by Myles Heffernan Jr., for owner Jackie Heffernan of Summerville.

In the two-year-old pacing filly Island Breeders final Brian Andrew Memorial, Saulsbrook Ocean took a two-hole ride to win the $12,000 event in 2:00.2 for driver Spence, trainer Joe Baxter and Nova Scotia owners Saulsbrook Stables of Windsor, Jennifer Baxter of Falmouth and Michael McKenzie of Newport. Second went to Bettorthanbobbi (Mark Bradley) with Tobins Choice (Campbell) finishing third. Al MacNeill of Windsor, N.S., and Louis Willinger of Louisville, Kentucky bred Saulsbrook Ocean, a daughter of Westwardho Hanover.

The Island Breeders two-year-old pacing colt final Pat McHugh Memorial saw Woodmere Rollnpop control the front end to win in 1:58.2 for trainer-driver MacDonald and owners Morah Kerr of Greenfield and Phonsie MacEachern of Port Hood, N.S.

A product of Bruce Wood’s Marshfield nursery, Woodmere Rollnpop prevailed over Windmere Ryan (Walter Cheverie) and Mr Kelly (Adam Merner).

Rose Run Quest found the winner’s circle in the $3,000 Preferred pace with a 1:55.3 victory for trainer-driver Campbell and owner Blair Hansen of Charlottetown.

Imagine Speed upset in the $2,800 Fillies and Mares Open at 10-1 odds with Spence in the bike for the 1:57.4 score for owners Doug Matheson of Cornwall and Jessica Hawkins of Warren Grove.
