Richard Moreau trainee Westbeach saw no sight but clear racetrack on Sunday (Oct. 31) at Flamboro Downs, winning the $13,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred 2 Pace in 1:54.2 before the track was forced to cancel its card.
The five-year-old Somebeachsomewhere mare secured the lead to a :27.3 first quarter while Mach My Kiss moved to sit the pocket. Cousin Mary, the 4-5 favourite, edged off the cones from third past a :57 half and inched towards the pacesetter nearing three-quarters in 1:25.1. Westbeach remained on a firm lead to the final turn and, with Cousin Mary faltering coming off the corner, maintained control to a 2-1/2-length win over Mach My Kiss. So Long Darling rallied for third and Cousin Mary settled for fourth.
Owned by Lachance Racing Stable and Dragon Racing Inc., Westbeach won her fourth race from 26 starts this season and her 11th from 74 overall, pushing her earnings to $176,240. Scott Coulter steered the $6.70 winner.
Flamboro contested just one more race following the Sunday second race feature. Technical difficulties forced the track to cancel the remainder of the planned 11-race card.
