The sub-zero, winter-like temperatures in Edmonton, Alta. didn't faze Sunshineatthebeach as she blazed to victory in the $11,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred 2 Handicap Pace featured on Friday night (Oct. 27) at Century Mile.
Shuffled to last with a quarter-mile to go, Sunshineatthebeach and driver Jamie Gray came flying down the homestretch on the far outside to defeat the duelling leaders for the 1:53.4 triumph with a sizzling :26.4 final frame. Outlaw Sharktastic (Nathan Sobey), the 4-5 favourite, held off the pocket-popping Metaki (Brandon Campbell) for the runner-up honours nearly three lengths behind after setting fractions of :28.1, :56.4 and 1:26. Sent to post as the 2-1 second choice, Sunshineatthebeach paid $6.80 to win.
Trained by Donna Sarin, Sunshineatthebeach earned her second Mares Preferred win at Century Mile in her last four starts. The seven-year-old daughter of Sunshine Beach is owned by 8113564 Canada Ltd. of Sherwood Park, Alta.
Sunshineatthebeach picked up her fourth win of the year from 30 starts and is now a 22-time career winner with her bankroll passing $280,000.
