In what are some truly unbelievable images, photographers were able to capture an incident Monday during harness racing action at Ashburton in New Zealand where a horse crashed through a rail and attempted to leap over a fence in the direction of racegoers
.
According to a report by stuff.co.nz, Mainland Key dumped its driver, Blair Orange, after the start of Race 3 the Fulton Hogan Mobile Pace. Mainland Key then started to gallop the wrong way down the homestretch before crashing through the outside rail. After smashing through the rail, the horse attempted to leap a fence separating fans from the racing surfaces.
"He actually charged under it, smashing it as if it was a twig and then headed towards the crowd ... He tried to jump a fence in front of the people, but the sulky got caught up in it and then everyone there rushed in to help calm him down," freelance photographer Martin Hunter was quoted as saying.
