After being sidelined for last year’s Breeders Crown Mare Pace, Twin B Joe Fresh collected her second career trophy in the event on Saturday, Oct. 24 when she defeated Francent N by three-quarters of a length in a stakes-record-equaling 1:48.1 in the $623,944 Grade 1 final at Eldorado Scioto Downs.
Twin B Joe Fresh, a six-year-old daughter of Roll With Joe-Fresh Breeze, won the 2024 Mare Pace at the Meadowlands but missed the 2025 final at Woodbine Mohawk Park because of injury. She was out the remainder of the season but has returned this year to win seven of 14 races and earn $920,108 for trainer Chris Ryder and driver Dexter Dunn.
For her career, Twin B Joe Fresh has 43 victories in 63 races and more than $4.3 million in purses. She has finished in the top three a total of 58 times.
In Saturday’s Breeders Crown Mare Pace final, Francent N and driver Louis-Philippe Roy led the field to the opening quarter in :26.1, outdueling The Last Martini (Doug McNair) for the top spot, while Twin B Joe Fresh landed in fourth. Dunn had Twin B Joe Fresh on a first-over march as Francent N reached the half in :54.4 and three-quarters in 1:22. The two betting favourites were separated by a head going into the stretch, but Twin B Joe Fresh powered home in a race-best :26 to secure the win. Talk Curdy To Me (Jason Bartlett) finished third.
“She's feeling so good right now,” Dunn said. “Once I saw Louis getting out of the gate good, much better than last week, I bailed out on to keep going forward. I went in for a few strides and then back out again, and she travelled up so good. I gave her a little chirp halfway down the backstretch and she really just bulked up and was ready to roll.
“To own her, it’s a dream. It’s a once in a lifetime. She’s just incredible.”
Twin B Joe Fresh, bred by Brittany Farms, is owned by Ryder of Allentown, N.J., Dunn of Wrightstown, N.J., Pete Trebotica of Bordentown, N.J. and Barry Spak of Thornton, Pa. She was the 2024 Dan Patch Award Horse of the Year.
“It’s so exciting to win the way she did,” Ryder said. “You feel a bit of pressure, but she didn't know it. I'm just thrilled.
“I believe she’s generational. She’s done unbelievable things for a long time, four years solid now. Every race has been a top-level race, and a horse can’t do much more than what she’s done. To win a Breeders Crown the way she did tonight, it just shows you what type of animal she is. She’s just a fantastic horse.”
Ryder also addressed Twin B Joe Fresh’s future following the race.
“We believe that we're not racing next year, but she does things like this, and it makes you think twice,” he said. “So, we'll see.”
The win was Dunn’s fourth Breeders Crown of the weekend and increased his career total to 27, moving him into a tie for fifth most in history among drivers. Ryder has now won 10 trophies.
Sent off as the 3-5 favourite, Twin B Joe Fresh paid $3.20 to win.
