Halloween may still be a week away, but at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono there have been quite a few horses generating scary numbers on the tote board, with a disproportionate number of pari-mutuel ghosts and goblins getting to the wire first.
On Monday night, Sinspirational and driver Tom Jackson rallied from third-over, grabbing the lead just before the wire and avoiding getting overhauled by Nittany Nation, who was last approaching mid-stretch, by a nose in a race where the first horse was separated from the seventh horse by a length on the money. Sinspirational paid $115.20 to win, with only a total of $62 on his nose out of a win pool of $4,452.
Sinspirational joined the double bombers of Saturday night, Capital Account ($70.40) and Wild Bill M ($131.40), and Sunday’s $90.40 outsider Penniman. Sinspirational joined Wild Bill M and October 15’s Decision Day ($124.40) to give Pocono three $100+ horses in its last six cards, after generating only seven in the first six months of 2017 racing at the mountain oval.
Even a fourteenth race win by 3-5 shot Big N Bad helped generate a monster payoff on Monday, because only one astute bettor had a ticket on the 8-4-2-5-4 Rainbow Pick 5 winning combination – and that astuteness made the winner $75,205.74 richer!
