The track record for older trotting mares was matched by Can I Say during Thursday evening’s card at Flamboro Downs thanks to her 1:56.1 performance in the $11,000 Preferred 2 for trotters.
Garrett Whelan sent the five-year-old daughter of Fourth And One-Emerald Éclair to the lead from Post 4 and she successfully sliced out splits of :27.2, :56.4 and 1:26.4 before using a :29.2 kicker to win by three-quarters of a length over BWT Taj. Third prize went to Equity.
Can I Say, who was sent off as the 2-5 favourite, joined Indys Kylee as the fastest trotting mares in the history of the half-mile oval. Jim Whelan trains and co-owns the OSS graduate with Terry and Clarence Devos. The 15-time winner pushed her lifetime earnings over $250,000 with the win.
Lakefield turned in a gate-to-wire win in the $7,000 Preferred 3 for trotters. The six-year-old son of Striking Sahbra-Flores whacked out fractions of :28.4, :59.2 and 1:29.2 for driver Luc Ouellette before using a :29.1 closing panel to win by 2-1/4 lengths over Chelseas Chance. Falcor Bluestone was a distant third.
Nick Gallucci trains the gelding, who was sent off as the 5/2 favourite, for Synerco Ventures Inc of Toronto, Ontario. It was the second consecutive win for the 18-time winner. He’s closing in on $300,000 in lifetime earnings.
