One of the most competitive groups in recent history competed in the $100,000 Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund final for two-year-old pacing colts Tuesday at Harrington Raceway.
In a highly-touted group that featured six different elimination winners, Ronald Benton and Sharon Wyatt’s Remember Me VK ($9.40, Montrell Teague) prevailed in track record fashion with a 1:52.3 triumph. It was the second straight DSBF final that produced a track record, after Purrfect Bags reset the two-year-old pacing filly mark in her final Monday.
Perched second-over behind Son Of A Sizzle, Remember Me VK surged three-wide on the final turn and outkicked the former in the stretch for a one-length win. Pacesetter KJ Ben set all the fractions and faded to fourth. Smoking Joey rallied for third.
Sired by Art Director, it was the second win in three career starts for Remember Me VK, who is trained by Bobby Wyatt. The horse was named by co-owner Benton, in honour of his late sister Vickie who passed away near the time of Remember Me VK’s birth.
“I knew there was a lot of speed in the race so I wanted to take him off the pace tonight,” said Teague, who articulated how high he has been on this colt since his first qualifier. “When I qualified this horse, I told Bobby (trainer Bobby Wyatt) we were going to have a lot of fun with this horse.”
Remember Me VK is a homebred out of owner Ronald Benton’s dam, All Memory.
“When I broke this colt, I thought he was something special,” said Wyatt. “Training him down I thought he had a lot of class. I have to congratulate and thank Montrell because he’s done a great job with him in every start.”
Driver Victor Kirby had four winners on the program. Jim Morand and Eddie Davis Jr. each had a driving double.
Both sexes of two-year-old trotters will compete in their respective $100,000 finals on the Wednesday, October 22 program.
