The hot-handed Trevor Henry kept up his winning crusade at the Western Fair District on Saturday night scoring four more victories, including one with Watkins in the featured $15,000 Preferred Trot for Canada's top conditioner.
Fresh off a victory in a Preferred event at Grand River Raceway, Richard Moreau trainee Watkins went wire-to-wire in 1:58 in his Saturday assignment, winning by three and a half lengths. Pocket-sitter Santo Domingo (Robert Shepherd) followed in second while Lexis D J (Ross Battin) rounded out the top three finishers nearly seven lengths behind.
Watkins notched his 20th career win and pushed his bankroll to $276,863. The five-year-old son of Striking Sahbra is owned by Matthew McManus of Burlington, Ont.
The favourite paid $4.20 to win.
Henry also scored with Paul Ruhl trainees Ja El Blaze ($2.80) and Crystal Downs ($3.40) and the Lynn Privett-conditioned This Bird Will Fly ($4.90). His grand slam pushed his 2012 win total to 409. He now holds a 10-win lead in the national driver standings over Billy Davis Jr.
