Longshot Lights Up Northside Toteboard

Of the six horses in the Saturday (October 20) feature at Northside Downs, four of them hit the wire in near unison with one of the longest shots on the board prevailing at 30-1 odds.

As the wings of the gate folded in the $1,350 Winners Over feature, the strongest away was rail horse Putnams Power (Harold Leblanc Jr.). His lead was short-lived as favourite Elm Grove Ladyluck (Adam Lynk) looped to the lead from the pocket and tripped the opening beam in :29.2. Last week's Winners Over winner, Keep A Secret (Roddy Hurley) committed to a first-over bid from third approaching the half-mile point, reached in :59.4. Dreamfair Van Dam (Gerard Kennedy) stalked from second over behind Keep A Secret down the Northside backside with top four a tightly-bunched group through the 1:30.3 third station.

Kennedy tipped Dreamfair Van Dam three-wide for the stretch drive around the final turn, while Leblanc was seeking racing room in the pocket with Putnams Power. As the field straightened out in the stretch, Leblanc found a seam up the inside to vie for the wire to create a four-across finish. With the most late pace, Putnams Power picked off the favourites for the 30-1 upset getting up over Dreamfair Van Dam by a neck in 2:01.1. Elm Grove Ladyluck finished third but was place fourth for interference to Keep A Secret (fourth placed third) in the stretch.

Trained and owned by William Seymour of Glace Bay, N.S., Putnams Power (Force Of Life - Southview Shania) nabbed the fifth win of his ten-year-old campaign. The veteran boasts 45 lifetime victories with more than $134,000 in earnings.
