Captain Sully made a confident move to the front past the quarter and strode out to an effortless two-length victory in a division of the A.W. Capone Memorial Series for freshman colt and gelding trotters yesterday at the Meadows, stamping himself as the favourite in next week’s $20,000 (added) final.
Mr Caviar and Most Wanted Lindy also captured $12,000 splits in the series’ second leg.
Captain Sully entered the series a five-race maiden, but had gained valuable experience in New York Sire Stakes. He handily won his Meadows debut last week in the series opener and had little trouble repeating after Dave Palone sent him on his decisive move.
He prevailed in 1:58.2, with Ellisarro Hanover saving place over the closing American Pegasus. Bill Zendt trains Captain Sully, a son of Conway Hall--Too Good For You, for Stable 45.
In the $27,500 Filly & Mare Preferred Handicap Pace, Spring Break ended an uncharacteristically long draught with a 9-1 victory in 1:52.3 for Mike Wilder, trainer Randy Bendis and owners Joann and Joe Thomson. Natalie was a half-length back in second, while Jans Luck rallied for third. Spring Break is a five-year-old daughter of Dream Away--Siobhan.
Palone and Bendis each fashioned a four-bagger on the 16-race card.
