Driver Gilles Bouvier seized the lead with Outlaw Tootsieroll early, and from that point forward the two had the race in the bag to win the $2,850 Fillies & Mares Open Handicap Pace at Marquis Downs on Saturday (Oct. 2).
Leaving from Post 5, Outlaw Tootsieroll secured the top past a :28.4 first quarter from Triple Action and slowed the tempo heading to a :58.4 half. Hurry Home mounted a first-over challenge moving to three-quarters, but Outlaw Tootsieroll upped the tempo slightly to that station in 1:27.4. From there, Hurry Home could only give pursuit as Outlaw Tootsieroll coasted home one-length better to win in 1:59. Triple Action finished third while A Cowboys Dream took fourth and odds-on favourite Northfield Nellie never left last and finished fifth of the five.
A six-year-old mare by Smart Shark, Outlaw Tootsieroll won her seventh race from 15 starts this season and her 18th from 82 overall. She has now earned $59,902. Lance Ward trains the $7 winner for owner Jaime Ward.
