Prince Of Sussex turned the tables on sophomore rival Mass Speed in their Preferred rematch on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 19 at Hippodrome 3R.
After coming up just a neck short when mounting a comeback from a break behind the gate in last Sunday's $5,500 Preferred Handicap Trot, outside assignee Prince Of Sussex got a smooth start in this week's edition for driver Stephane Brosseau and overtook 2-5 favourite Mass Speed (Denis St. Pierre) into a :29.2 opening quarter then led the way to the half in :59.3. Their rematch ensued when a first-over Only For Justice (Marie-Claude Auger) broke stride once he met Prince Of Sussex on top at the 1:29.4 three-quarters mark. Mass Speed took his shot turning into the stretch but Prince Of Sussex held off the Trophee des Eleveurs champion this time to prevail in 1:59.3 by one length. Lorenzo (Mario Lachance) finished behind those two in third place once again.
Serge Houde trains Prince Of Sussex, who earned his first Preferred win, for owner Marc Lemay of Lac-Beauport, Que. The six-year-old Creatine-Pana Colada gelding has won five of his 34 starts this year and notched his 31st career victory.
He paid $5.90 to win and $2.50 to place as the 9-5 second choice in the five-horse field with no show wagering.
The feature win was one of three on the 10-race card for Brosseau, who also trained the final winner himself, Artsalive ($7.40). Louis-Philippe Turcotte led all trainers on Sunday with a triple, including the Brosseau-driven Whitemountaincammy ($8.50). Turcotte was also victorious with Night Terror ($2.60) and Siddhartha ($5.30), two of three winners on the program driven by Marie-Claude Auger. Those victories pushed Auger her over the 100-win mark in a single season for the first time in her driving career and capped off a successful weekend for the Trois-Rivieres, Que. horsewoman, who won the Harness The Hope Driving Challenge on Friday visiting Western Fair Raceway.
