Rod Starkewski trainee Crackle N Burn kicked for the lead once off a helmet and bolted to a 1:53.4 victory in the $8,100 Open Pace on Tuesday (Oct. 19) at Century Downs.

Away fourth to a :27 first quarter, Crackle N Burn stayed put at the pegs while Retros Mystery rolled on a loose lead to a :56 half. Pocket-sitter Outlaw Gunsablazin gradually reeled in the tiring pacesetter while the clip accelerated up the backside and ranged wide to take over the lead by three-quarters in 1:24. Crackle N Burn meanwhile tracked Outlaw Gunsablazin’s move and, once he crossed over to the cones, spurted by to grab command. The five-year-old Blue Burner gelding strolled through the stretch to win by 1-1/4 lengths over favourite Icy Blue Scooter rallying for second. Outlaw Gunsablazin settled for third and Tiempo Hanover took fourth.

A homebred owned by trainer Rod Starkewski, Crackle N Burn won his fifth race from 19 starts this season and his 16th from 70 starts overall, earning $203,214. Phil Giesbrecht drove the $9.30 winner.
