The key to victory on the Saturday (Oct. 19) card of harness racing at Exhibition Park Raceway was to cut the mile and dare rivals to pass.
On the six-dash card, each of the winners fronted the field at the quarter-mile marker. Two of the races -- one with four starters, another with five -- actually finished in post position order.
The feature race on the day was the $1,550 Winners Over Pace in the sixth race. Sophomore pacing filly Pickpocketprincess made every call a winning one against her older foes, clearing to the top for driver Todd Trites just past the :29.2 opening panel. The middle splits of the mile were reached in 1:00.2 and 1:30.4, and then Pickpocketprincess powered home in :29.3 to hit the wire in 2:00.2. Bugger Max (Mark Haig) finished second with heavy favourite Brandons Glory (John Davidson) an uninvolved third after a pocket trip.
Wayne Hubbard of Saint John, N.B. owns and trains Pickpocketprincess (Varadero Hanover - Julie Gilmore) who's now a nine-time winner in her sophomore season.
