Digging For Gold took his third Open win in four starts since moving to Vernon Downs with a late-charging effort in the $11,972 Open Handicap Pace on Saturday, Oct. 17.

Fear Romeo (Rock Vinci) went straight to the front and led through opening sections of :26.4 and :55.3 with Digging For Gold last of five for trainer-driver Ron Harp. Belmont Royale N (Chris Long) made the first move, going uncovered heading around the final turn with Digging For Gold on his tail to three quarters in 1:23.4.

As they made the turn for home, the race became a free for all. Merrow (Leon Bailey) slipped through on the cones as Belmont Royale N plugged away on the outside. Digging For Gold came flying four-wide to swoop the group and win by a length in 1:51.3. Belmont Royale N finished second over Merrow.

Digging For Gold, a four-year-old gelding by Huntsville-Gold Orchid N, is now five-for-14 this year for owner Big Sky Ranch. Saturday's win was his 17th lifetime in 42 starts. He paid $3.56 to win.

Leon Bailey, Truman Gale, Chris Long, Harp and John MacDonald had driving doubles, with Harp training both of his winners. Jamie Daley also recorded a pair of conditioning wins.

Vernon Downs will host its next card on Friday, Oct. 23 with a post time of 5:05 p.m.
