Trot Insider has learned that star sophomore pacing colt Beach Glass will not be entered into this weekend's eliminations for the 2022 Breeders Crown at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
Beach Glass last raced on Oct. 1 at The Red Mile, finishing fourth and out of the top two for the first time this season. After the race it was determined the colt flipped his palate and was subsequently sent for surgery to repair the trapped epiglottis on Oct. 3 at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky.
Trainer and co-owner Brent McGrath indicated that the prognosis was positive at the time of the surgery for the possibility of a return by Breeders Crown weekend, but MacGrath told Trot Insider on Monday (Oct. 17) that the connections felt it was best for all involved to stay on the sidelines for now. A return for some of the colt's previously scheduled late season stakes races at Dover Downs hasn't been ruled out at this time.
"Things didn't progress as well as we'd hoped, and we're still in the hunt to see what the next couple of weeks will bring," said MacGrath.
Beach Glass (Somebeachsomewhere - Im With Her) has bankrolled just north of a million dollars this season while posting a 7-3-0 summary from 11 starts for Schooner II Stable of Truro, N.S.
Beach Glass in 2023?
That's unfortunate for Beach Glass's connections, If Bythemissal, as expected, wins The Breeders Crown in 2 weeks, that should pretty much sew up US divisional honours for him. Hopefully Beach Glass will race again next year too.
