Drake was a non-factor seventh in last week’s Preferred-3 assignments at Flamboro Downs, but a change of scenery and an improved post helped him bounce back in a big way on Monday evening.
In rein to Bob McClure, Drake got away in mid-pack in Monday’s $8,500 Preferred 3 for horse and gelding pacers at The Raceway at Western Fair District. He watched Team Edward and Munndutch battle to the quarter in :28.2 before the latter muscled his way to the top. Munndutch then came under attack from Brodys Scrapper who pressed the lead to the mid-way point in :58.2.
Their war continued to the three-quarter pole in 1:26.4, with Brodys Scrapper showing a short lead at that juncture. Drake slipped out to catch that foe’s cover at the half, and McClure had his charge in hustled mode as he sailed up three-wide at the three-quarter pole. Drake then used a :29.2 closing panel to win by 1-1/2 lengths over Brodys Scrapper in 1:56.4. Munndutch was third.
Trainer Justin Robson co-owns the five-year-old son of Six Of Diamonds-Armbro Robin with Michel Gaudreault and Lynn Cameron. The gelding is now 7-for-21 this year and 13-for-85 in his career. He’s banked in excess of $27,000 this year and over $111,000 to date.
