Driver Tyler Redwood was taken to hospital on Sunday (October 16) after having been involved in a racing accident at Century Downs Racetrack and Casino in Alberta. The Redwood family has provided an update on Tyler’s status.

The Redwood family posted on Facebook later Sunday night that Tyler had been released from hospital

The family explained that Tyler had suffered “some painful deep tissue damage,” but that he was “otherwise in good health”

The two-horse accident occurred in Race 4. Redwood was aboard three-year-old gelding Mr Prominister, who broke stride and fell. Redwood was unseated from his sulky and hit the track.

The incident occurred after the first quarter heading towards the turn. Redwood and Mr Prominister were racing in third-place at that point.

Ganymeda Gold was following in fourth at that point and could not avoid colliding with Mr Prominister. The crash flipped Ganymeda Gold’s driver, Nathan Sobey, out of his race bike, but onto his feet towards the infield.

The trailing two horses in the field of maiden pacers were able to maneuver outside of the fallen horses, although it appeared Redwood was hit by one of the sulky wheels.

Initial reports from Century Downs officials had explained that Redwood had been taken to hospital to be checked out with possible lower back and rib injures.

Sobey was able to resume his driving duties on the program. Both horses involved were not seriously injured. The race was declared a 'no contest,' which resulted in a full pari-mutuel refund of wagers.

Please join Standardbred Canada in wishing Tyler Redwood a speedy and complete recovery from his injuries.
