After giving way under late pressure last week, Sheer Terror found his way back to the winner's enclosure with a wire-to-wire performance over six rivals in the $16,901 Open Pace at Rosecroft Raceway on Monday, Oct. 13.
In line to Jonathan Roberts, even-money favourite Sheer Terror yielded briefly to 9-5 second choice On The Cards N (Declan Donoway) before forging forward off the first turn to control a :26.2 opening quarter. After rating a :55.2 half, Sheer Terror shrugged off a futile first-over challenge from Layton Hanover (Russell Foster) up the backstretch before steadily extending his lead to 7-1/4 lengths at the end of a 1:52.3 mile. Winbak Willy T (Lucas Myers) and R N B Band (Justin Walters) — the two longest shots on the board — rallied from deep off the pace to finish second and third, respectively.
Willard Reynolds trains Sheer Terror for owner Mark Howard of Federalsburg, Maryland. The five-year-old Always B Miki-Economy Terror gelding hit the 10-win and $100,000-earning marks for the second straight season. He paid $4 to win.
Roberts led all drivers with four wins on the 13-race card, also teaming up with Reynolds to win with Ultimaroca (1:53.3, $2.40), as well as Jerry Nock trainee Rustys Lancelot (1:54.3, $8.40) and Johnny Crites Jr. trainee Velocity Gator (1:54, $6.60).
Live harness racing at Rosecroft resumes on Thursday, Oct. 16 with a 13-race card slated for a 7:15 p.m. start and a $751.95 carryover in the Jackpot Hi-5, offered in race 10.
