One Last Shot drew away from his fellow two-year-old pacing colts and geldings down the stretch to capture the $75,000 British Columbia Sires Stakes Final and kick off a five-win night for driver John Abbott on Saturday at Fraser Downs.
Leaving from post three, One Last Shot settled away fifth off the gate while his co-favoured entrymate Hesouttamyleague (Kevin Anderson) tried to out-sprint Kootenay Positive (J.F. Gagne) to the lead, but made a costly break in stride.
Kootenay Positive carved out opening panels of :27.4 and :58 over the sloppy surface before being confronted by Now Playing (Jim Marino). Advancing from third, Now Playing swept to the top and hit three-quarters in 1:27 with One Last Shot hot on his heels. Abbott opted to tuck One Last Shot into a gapping two-hole around the final turn before sending him after the new leader in the straightaway.
Down the stretch, One Last Shot surged past Now Playing to score the three length victory in 1:57.2. Battle Station (John Hudon) finished third.
One Last Shot paid $4.10 to win.
Debra McCarthy trains the homebred Power Of Art-Tuffet Hanover gelding for owner Mark Anderson of Willows, California. One Last Shot now sports a record reading 1-1-2 in four stakes starts with his earnings soaring to $45,175.
The 27-year-old Abbott completed a four-race win streak with My Candidate ($20.90) winning the second race for trainer Don Monkman Jr., Joe Millionaire ($6.90) prevailing over Fiddles Missile and brother Mark in the third race for conditioner Dustin Poloway, and G G Jaw Breaker ($7.20) capturing the fourth race for his father Gord. He later won the 10th race with Red Star Tyson ($17.10) for trainer Richard Craig to bring his Saturday win total to five.
