The final matinee of the 2010 season at Batavia Downs took place on Columbus Day (Monday, October, 11) and it featured the Italian American drivers' race. Eight Italian American reinsmen raced for bragging rights, and, more importantly, a box of delicious cannolis.
Taking advantage of his rail post draw, Tom Agosti, sitting behind Encil, left alertly, opened a big lead around the final turn, and had enough in the tank to hold off fellow Italians Carmen Cappotelli (who was steering Guest Host) and Denny Bucceri (S B Quents Knight) to win by one and a quarter lengths in 1:59.
The field was combined of fellow Italians Rock Vinci, Mike Caprio, John Mungillo, Paul Zambito, Jr and Alex Giuliani.
“I was happy to participate and even happier to win,” Agosti said. “Those cannolis definitely look good.”
The Italian American driver’s race was a Batavia Downs tradition but this was the first time it was held since Western Regional Off-Track betting purchased the historic track in 1998.
“We had a very good day, the on-track handle was higher than expected and the clubhouse was very busy,” commented Michael D. Kane, vice president of live racing. “We’ll certainly consider holding another Columbus Day matinee next year.”
Racing fans are reminded because of the Columbus Day program there will be no racing this week on Tuesday. The 64th season at the Genesee County racetrack continues on Wednesday night. First-race post time is 6:40 p.m. The 2010 season runs through December 4. For more information please visit bataviadownscasino.com.
