The quick thinking of a pair of transport truck drivers recently helped avert disaster for an escaped racehorse that had made its way out onto a highway.
According to an article by the CBC, Airdrie RCMP in Alberta received word that a racehorse had escaped its barn during the early-morning hours of September 25.
The racehorse was later spotted travelling down the middle of the Queen Elizabeth II Highway, and it was then that the drivers worked together to ensure that the horse did not get itself hurt.
RCMP spokesperson Constable Dan Martin has explained that the horse had sort of stopped and headed towards a ditch. At that point, one of the drivers “stopped and blocked the horse from getting back on the highway,” according to Const. Martin.
“The other driver stopped to help and, between the two of them, they were able to approach it (the horse) and put the harness on. Police arrived shortly after."
The harness was made from a tow strap. Const. Martin said that the horse was calm when it was being corralled, and the driver that created the ‘harness’ seemed to have experience with animals.
"One of the investigators explained that the driver who made the harness seemed to be quite familiar with livestock,” said Const. Martin. “I'm assuming he's worked with horses or cattle before and kind of knew what to do."
