For the second week in a row the Ontario Sires Stakes’ top three-year-old pacing fillies produced a barnburner of a finish at Rideau Carleton Raceway, and this time it was Katys Jet prevailing in the $130,000 Gold Series Final.
The daughter of Jeremes Jet-Major Delight, who came up a nose short in last week’s elimination after doing all of the roadwork, was treated to a pocket trip this time around and she didn’t let it go to waste.
Scott Zeron hustled Katys Jet to the early lead in the rich final, but race favourite Apogee Hanover prompted her along to the quarter pole in :26.3 before working her way to the top for driver Doug McNair. Apogee Hanover didn’t get a breather, however, as she was pressed to the mid-way point in :55 by Mia Seelster.
Apogee Hanover put away that foe in the backstretch and proceeded to march the field to the three-quarter pole in 1:23.1. Jet Wash uncorked a big rally from the backfield in the lane and pocket-sitting Katys Jet found room up the passing lane in the stretch, and it was Katys Jet using a :29.4 closing panel to win by a head over Apogee Hanover in 1:53.1. Jet Wash, who took home the show dough, came up a neck short.
Casie Coleman trains Katys Jet for Steve Calhoun of Chatham, ON, and together they’ve watched the filly assembled a 3-3-0 record from 15 starts this season. It was the richest payday to date for the six-time winner, who has racked up more than $255,000 to date.
