Trot Insider has learned that Standardbred horsepeople and fans alike will now have the chance to name a rare filly that recently hit the ground in the Maritimes.

The Nova Scotia Harness Racing Industry Association has announced that ‘Cheering for Charity’ is conducting a Name the Foal Contest for Barona Lilac’s filly. She was born on April 18 and is one of first and only crop by Steelhead Hanover.

The late Steelhead Hanover, who was a popular young first-year stallion at the time, was euthanized at the Atlantic Veterinary College on May 4, 2017 following emergency treatment. Steelhead Hanover, a multiple stakes-winning son of Bettors Delight, had won 24 lifetime races and banked more than $577,000 in purses. He was a half-brother to Sprig Hanover, the dam of 2016 two-year-old world champion Downbytheseaside.

The NSHRIA is hoping that it can get some great name suggestions through the contest, as well as provide another opportunity to give back to some great organizations in the Colchester County.

The person who submits the chosen name will be able to chose which charity (Big Brothers Big Sisters, SOS Dragon Boat Team, Truro Boys and Girls Club, Bible Hill Fire Brigade, or the Truro Rotary Club) will receive a share in the filly at no cost.

Anyone can submit a name by email to [email protected] by Thursday, November 1. The winning name will be announced by Thursday, November 15.

This initiative is a way to continue to build on what ‘Lilac’ began by giving back to our local community as well as to spread awareness of the harness racing industry.
