Gilles Barrieau put the pedal to the metal early with Burn Out Hanover, and the gelding responded with a front-stepping score in the $2,900 feature race Thursday evening at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
Sent off at odds of 4-1, the Jeff Holmes trainee rocketed to the lead from Post 1 and successfully chopped out fractions of :28.2, :57 and 1:25.3 before scooting home in :29.3 to win by a half-length margin over Mantario in 1:55.1. Race favourite Cowboy Logic, who came first over, came up a length short while finishing third.
Burn Out Hanover, who is owned by Orwell Bay Stable of Orwell, PE, won for the fourth time this season and for the 19th time in his career. The five-year-old son of Well Said-Burning Point has banked over $90,000 to date.
Freddie used a similar approach to win the $2,400 Open Handicap for trotters on the Thursday evening program.
Sent off as the 3-2 favourite, Freddie took parked past the quarter in :29.2 before working his way to the lead and then setting middle splits of :58.3 and 1:28.4. He kicked home in :29 to win by 2-1/4 lengths over Glider Man in 1:57.4. Cheeky Little Minx was third.
Trained and driven by Marc Campbell, who made five trips to victory lane on the 14-race card, Freddie won for the sixth time this season and for the 66th time in his career. The eight-year-old son of Majestic Son-Circe Hanover, who is owned by Three Wisemen Stable of Kingston, PE, has banked over $160,000 in his career.
