Four Starz Speed continued his perfect 11-year-old campaign on Sunday night (Jan. 31) at Rideau Carleton Raceway as he notched his third straight victory this month in the top class $6,650 Winners Over Handicap Trot.
The classy veteran trotter was driven by Pierre Desjardins and moved from fifth in front of the grandstand to follow the cover of What A Rush. When the first over attacker got rough-gaited and broke stride on the backside, Four Starz Speed began to steadily gain ground on the race leader Creampuff Macdaddy (:29, :59.1, 1:29.3) and took over command in the final turn en route to the 1:59.4 victory over the 'good' track, which was rated two seconds off.
Four Starz Speed paid $5.90 to win as the slight second choice in the wagering. Favourite Unabating, the early trailer in the six-horse field, tracked the winner's cover and finished one and a half lengths behind in second-place while Michelangelo rallied for third.
Four Starz Speed (Conway Hall-Lotstoliveupto) is now a career winner of 35 races and $747,414 in purses. The gelding is trained Sebastien Giroux, who also shares ownership with Richard Dinelle of Limoges, Ont. and Michel Lagace of Terrebonne, Que.
