The first top-class event of 2026 at Century Mile came down to a three-horse photo, and Senga Nightmare had her nose in front to upset at 12-1 in the $16,000 Fillies and Mares Preferred Pace on Saturday, Jan. 3.

The field got away in program order, with Senga Nightmare travelling in fourth through a first quarter of :31 set by favourite Outlaw Sharktastic (Nathan Sobey) over a track labelled as frozen with a five-second variant. Ryan Grundy sent Senga Nightmare, the longest shot on the board, out first-over nearing the half in 1:01.4, and the mare took air while advancing with Grey Sea (Kelly Hoerdt) in her draft to three-quarters in 1:30.4.

Senga Nightmare rallied relentlessly and gained gradually on Outlaw Sharktastic down the lane, reaching her bridle in deep-stretch. A charging Grey Sea rolled up in the final 1/16th of a mile, but Senga Nightmare eclipsed Outlaw Sharktastic and held off the closer by a nose to win in 2:00.4. Grey Sea edged out Outlaw Sharktastic for second.

After finishing her 2025 campaign with a win on Nov. 28, Senga Nightmare started the new year perfect for her 40th lifetime victory. Grundy of Airdrie, Alta. owns and trains the eight-year-old daughter of Vertical Horizon-Nells Sweet Future, who has now earned $288,697 in 166 career starts. The mare paid $27.60 to win.
